This year’s Grand Haven Salmon Festival was threatened with stormy skies but volunteers, vendors and patrons didn’t let it slow down the festivities. The Salmon Festival is in the process of becoming the first Certified Sustainable Festival in Michigan with this year’s serving products for the Friday Night Fish Boil, Salmon Cook-Off & Wine/Beer Tasting, and Fall Harvest Entertainment Tent being 100% compostable. Even the trash bags are compostable, as they are working with Chef Container in Holland to process all of the compost and to recycle all of the wine bottles. The Salmon Festival is striving to become a Zero-to-Landfill Festival down the road. The Holiday Inn Spring Lake sponsored the KidZone yet again displaying our mini-great sign as well as face painting and bird feeder activities. Smokey the Bear made his rounds posing for pictures with all the kids and passing out educational DNR information. Jack’s on the Waterfront competed in the Salmon Cook-Off introducing Salmon with Late Summer Vegetables to the judges and taking home the gold in the most Michigan Influenced Dish! Jack’s offered a Salmon Sushi and Salmon Cupcake to patrons and received multiple comments that we were very unique and different in competition, not to mention tasty! The chill wore off and the sun began to shine making the 2012 Grand Haven Salmon Festival a success yet again. We can’t wait until next year when we can help the festival celebrate their 10 year anniversary!
